Sedation Dentistry for Dental Anxiety
Do you have dental anxiety?
If you are fearful or anxious about going to the dentist, you're not alone. Sedation dentistry, sometimes called Sleep Dentistry keeps patients comfortable during dental procedures. It’s beneficial for people who have anxiety about a dental procedure or for those who are undergoing lengthy treatment. It's important to note that dentists must have special certification to provide sedation dentistry.
Options include oral conscious sedation and intravenous (IV) sedation.
IV Sedation/Twilight Sedation
Dr. Hooks is one of the few general dentists on the Treasure coast certified by the state of Florida to administer Intravenous Conscious Sedation ("twilight sedation").
IV sedation involves administering anti-anxiety medication into the bloodstream to induce a deep state of relaxation. The patient remains conscious enough to respond to verbal cues but they will feel very relaxed and will not remember much from the procedure. The drugs have a very calming effect and will wear off several hours after your treatment.
You will need someone to drive you home after your visit and will most likely rest or sleep when you get home.
Oral Sedation
Don't let fear of going to the dentist keep you from getting the dental treatment you need for good oral health.
Riverview Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry offers sedation dentistry for those who have mild to severe dental anxiety.
Oral sedation involves medication taken orally approximately one hour before the dental procedure produces a light to moderate sedation effect.
The patient is awake and able to respond but may feel drowsy during treatment.
